Study Overview

About the Study

The COVID MUSIC Study is an important research study funded by NIH and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This research study will help us learn more about Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) and its effects on the long-term health of children.

Purpose of the Study

MIS-C is a new condition related to COVID-19, so we are still learning about its causes, effects, and long-term impact. “Long-Term Outcomes after the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome In Children”, the COVID MUSIC Study, is a research study funded by NIH and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. We hope to enroll at least 900 young people with MIS-C at children’s medical centers in the U.S. and Canada. This research study will help us learn more about MIS-C and its effects on the long-term health of children.

COVID MUSIC Study Disparities in MIS-C

Disparities in MIS-C

MIS-C, like COVID-19, has disproportionally affected Black and Latinx children and teens. In addition to information about the health of study participants, the MUSIC study will collect data, such as age, race, health insurance status, income, and location, to help analyze potential social, demographic, and medical risk factors for MIS-C.

As a Pediatric Heart Network study, the COVID MUSIC study is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. To learn more about these principles, visit the PHN website.

Objectives

At least 900 young people with MIS-C will be enrolled at leading children’s medical centers in the U.S. and Canada. The study will be conducted over up to 5 years. This research study will help us learn more about MIS-C and its effects on the long-term health and well-being of children. If longer-term health problems are found, the MUSIC study may also suggest potential strategies to improve late outcomes.
We want to learn more about a condition called MIS-C and the long-term health of children who have had it. MIS-C is a rare complication of COVID-19 that develops about 2-6 weeks after having had COVID-19. While it is normal for the immune system to fight off an infection, children with MIS-C seem to have their immune systems turned on too strongly. This can affect many organ systems, including the heart. When children are diagnosed with MIS-C, they may have decreased heart function (meaning how the heart squeezes), enlargement of the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that bring oxygenated blood to the heart), and heart rhythm problems. However, we do not know the long-term effects of MIS-C on the heart or other organ systems.
The COVID MUSIC Study is enrolling participants who are younger than 21 years of age and who have experienced symptoms of MIS-C. We are conducting this study to understand the short- and longer-term effects of MIS-C on the heart and other organ systems in a large group of participants across North America.
Participants in the COVID MUSIC Study will be asked to share health information from medical records, through information collected as part of routine care, and optionally through additional tests provided as part of the study. All of the information gathered for the COVID MUSIC Study is for research purposes and participation will occur over up to 5 years. The results of this long-term study on MIS-C will help medical professionals, parents, and patients understand important things about the long-term health outcomes in children and young adults after MIS-C. The results may also help improve care of children, teens, and young adults with similar problems in the future.

Study Funding

The COVID MUSIC Study is funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institutes of Health, and is being conducted by the Pediatric Heart Network.

Pediatric Heart Network (PHN)

Founded in 2001, the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN) is an NHLBI funded research network that spans across a group of hospitals in the United States and Canada. Because PHN is a longstanding collaborative network conducting current research on pediatric heart disease, involving scientific expertise that specializes in the care of patients with heart disease, the PHN was able to quickly provide the foundation to launch the COVID MUSIC Study.
