Why Sites Were Selected

These sites are participating based on their ability to support participation, center size, geographic location to provide access to a diverse population, amongst other criteria. All MUSIC sites were selected based on their reputations in the care of children, and on their prior contributions to collaborative research activities. We also looked for sites that could ensure racial and ethnic diversity similar to that seen in MIS-C. In addition, we looked for geographic diversity, and sites in COVID-19 ‘hot spots’ who had seen or were likely to see a large number of children and adolescents with MIS-C.

Who is the Study Team

Each study location has a lead investigator, called the Principal Investigator, who is responsible for leading the research study at that location. Each location also has a dedicated team of coordinators and other study staff who are here to help. Some studies have large teams, and others are small, with one or two individuals managing the study.

Parents should be comfortable and familiar with the study team. They should know who to call for general questions and who to call in an emergency.

Principal Investigator (PI)

Often a medical doctor and is responsible for the entire study. He or she oversees the care of all the participants while they are in the study. The PI can sometimes be your child’s regular doctor.

Research Nurse(s)

Responsible for patient recruitment. They also assess eligibility and, along with the study doctor, provide treatment. Part of their role is to collect data and follow-up with participants.

Research Coordinator(s)

Make sure the study runs smoothly. They understand all parts of the study and make sure the staff has the right equipment, medication, or devices needed to run the study. They may also assess eligibility, collect data, and follow-up with participants.
